Summer storm set to batter Thailand with wild weather (2025)

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for today, April 7, forecasting a summer storm set to sweep across northern and northeastern Thailand, bringing with it strong winds and hailstones in some unlucky spots.

Meanwhile, Bangkok and surrounding areas aren’t off the hook either, with thunderstorms expected to lash 30% of the capital, commuters could be in for a soggy surprise. Officials are urging the public to stay indoors, secure loose items, and keep an eye on the skies. With hail on the horizon, it’s umbrellas up and helmets on!

The storm is attributed to a moderate high-pressure system or cold air mass from China, now covering upper northern and northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea. This has resulted in southern and southeastern winds sweeping over upper Thailand, coinciding with the generally hot weather in the area.

Residents in upper Thailand are advised to exercise caution during the storm, avoiding travel through thunderstorm-affected areas and staying away from open spaces, large trees, unstable structures, and billboards. Farmers are encouraged to reinforce fruit trees and prepare to protect their crops and livestock from potential damage. Additionally, maintaining good health during these weather changes is crucial.

Southeastern and eastern winds continue to affect the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea, leading to isolated thunderstorms in these areas. Both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are expected to experience waves reaching about 1 metre, with areas facing thunderstorms seeing waves over 2 metres. Local sailors are advised to avoid navigating through thunderstorm-affected regions.

The current weather conditions also impact dust accumulation, with the north and northeastern regions experiencing moderate to high levels of dust and haze. However, the situation is expected to stabilise or improve due to rainfall in these areas.
